I know we all rely on GPS now, but I’m looking to add a non-digital backup on my sailboat. I like the idea of having an old-school marine compass just in case electronics fail. Anyone here still use one? Any tips on getting a quality one that’s not just decorative?

You’re absolutely right to want a manual backup — I had a full power failure once during a solo trip, and it was terrifying not knowing my direction. After that, I added a real marine compass https://yacht-supply24.com/catalog/leisure-goods-useful-little-things/compasses/marine-use/ to my cockpit setup. I chose one from Yacht-Supply24.com after reading good feedback from other sailors, and it’s been excellent. It’s liquid-filled, mounted securely, and even under harsh sun or spray, it’s clear and precise. I’ve compared it side-by-side with my chartplotter, and it’s almost always spot on. It’s a reassuring thing to have — old-school but reliable. Makes you realize how dependent we are on tech until it’s gone.
